While the first green bond was issued in 2008, the market has grown exponentially in the last decade. Linklaters data shows there was 935 green bonds issued in the six months to June end alone, with the global market currently sitting at about US$2 trillion - and it's only going to grow further.
This is because the impact green bonds can have is also significant, from financing green real estate and infrastructure, to managing waste, water and pollution. While very similar to traditional bonds, the outcomes they produce couldn't be more different.
In the opinion of BNP Paribas Asset Management's Arnaud-Guilhem Lamy, 'greenium' is not meaningful and green bonds can present a compelling investment opportunity.
