Michael Thawley is vice-chairman of Capital Group International, a member of the Capital Group Companies. He is also vice-chairman of the boards of Capital International Fund, Capital International Portfolios and Capital Group Emerging Markets Growth Fund.
He was Australia's ambassador to the United States from 2000 to 2005. He proposed and played a key role in achieving a free-trade agreement between Australia and the United States. In late 2014 he served as the secretary of the department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. In this position, he was the chief policy adviser to the prime minister and head of the Australian public service. Michael was appointed an officer in the Order of Australia in 2006 for services advancing Australia's strategic and economic interests.
