This presentation examines the evolution of portfolio construction over the last century and the continued development of methodologies to address the ever-changing nature of financial markets. It considers equities historically over the longer term and asks whether expectations are realistic, given the reward and risk aspects of this asset class. It also looks at the benefits and limitations of traditional forms of diversification along with considerations for the behavioural aspects of financial markets. Finally, three guiding principles are provided for consideration, in the context of portfolio construction in the real world.
